Amgen Inc., based in Thousand Oaks, California, was founded in 1980 as Applied Molecular Genetics Inc. and is one of the pioneers of biotechnology. Today, it is the world's largest independent biotechnology company with nearly 21,000 employees in almost 100 countries.

Amgen gained a foothold in Switzerland in 1989 with the European hub, followed by the Swiss branch in 2002. The hub and Swiss branch have been based in Rotkreuz since 2018.

Using state-of-the-art genetic engineering techniques, Amgen is working to unravel the complexity of disease and understand the fundamentals of human biology.
